New Works Calgary celebrates Canada’s best new music

Providing concert goers with an opportunity to explore new Canadian music, don’t miss this full weekend of diverse music and sound art events around the city.
Presented by New Works Calgary, the third annual Calgary New Music Festival is bound to be a treat.
“The starting point for this year’s festival was the 150th anniversary of Canada and the potential for new music to play a role in that celebration. In keeping with the idea of a celebration, we want to “make a noise” about new music creators and performers, especially those active in Canada,” says Laurie Radford, New Works Calgary’s Artistic Director, in a statement.
Aside from one event featuring Israel’s Meitar Ensemble, all of the performers are Canadian and include Calgary’s own Timepoint Ensemble. There’s even a full day of entertainment planned for October 22 with Soundwalk—a guided listening tour where participants are lead through the environment and encouraged to open their ears to the sounds around them—followed by three back-to-back electronic concerts at Festival Hall.

Meitar Ensemble

Under the direction of one of Europe’s finest interpreters of new music, conductor Pierre-André Valade leads the Meitar Ensemble for this program of music from Philippe Leroux. Based in Tel-Aviv, the group has been featured at some of the most prestigious venues worldwide and has commissioned and premiered over 200 new works.

Timepoint Ensemble

Rockeys Duo

Make a Noise Festival Marathon

A festival highlight, you won’t want to miss this electronics marathon. It all kicks off at 3:00pm with Raylene Campbell on Therovox, followed by Shawn Mativestsky’s engaging combination of virtuoso tabla playing and electronics at 4:00pm. And at 5:00pm hear Ben Reime’s unique program for solo kit drum and electronics by Eliot Briton, Nicole Lizée, and Stuart S Smith.
