Movies return to the GRAND with new film series

Calgary’s oldest theatre the GRAND is an art house gem but did you know it served as a movie house for 30 years?
Theatre Junction and the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers (CSIF) have teamed up to pay homage to the theatre’s past with this new series of all-Canadian films and it kicks off with comedy classic, Strange Brew.
“We’re excited to be revisiting cinema, a nod to the GRAND’s movie house era and inviting people to experience an art form different than the contemporary theatre we normally showcase,” says Theatre Junction’s Administrative Coordinator Oliver Pennock, in a statement. “Strange Brew was chosen because it’s a Canadian cult classic with Bob and Doug McKenzie mocking Canadian stereotypes in a way that you can’t help but laugh at.”
In Strange Brew the McKenzie’s drink the rest of their dad’s beer but with no money to replace the stash, they devise a plan to put a baby mouse in a beer bottle and take it to a local brewery demanding compensation. The plan backfires when they find themselves employed and in trouble with the people trying to take over the world… with beer. Paying tribute to the themes, attendees are encouraged to dress as hosers—plaid, winter boots, toques, and hockey jerseys are encouraged.
Strange Brew screens October 13, 2017 at Theatre Junction GRAND (608 1st St. SW). Doors open at 7:00pm with the main feature at 8:30pm.
